Marayoor Sandalwood Forest

Maryoor, a forested village in the Western Ghats, is the only place in Kerala, India, where natural sandalwood forests grow. Sandal wood tree, scientifically known as or Santalum album is a parasitic tree having fragrant and close-grained yellowish heartwood. About sixty thousand choice sandalwood trees grow over 93 square kilometers of low rainfall tract of Marayoor. Good quality sandal wood is produced from the sustainably managed forests. Sandalwood has been a part of the religious and spiritual traditions of India since prehistory and has been effectively used in traditional medicine for thousands of years. Sandalwood oil, also known as  ‘liquid gold,’ is extracted from the roots and wood of sandalwood by the process of steam distillation.Know more
